Lehi 33rd Miamaids

I am currently serving in my ward as the first counselor in the Young Women's organization.  This means that I work with the miamaids (14 and 15 year-olds) and get to spend time with these great girls.  We have so much fun together!

Ellie Is Seven!

This little girl is seven!  Hard to believe it, but she is growing up.  I love so many things about Ellie, but will choose just three to share today.

#1: Her independent spirit.  Ellie has always been one that wants to do things her own way.  Whether it is her hairstyle, her outfit, or even what she is eating for lunch, she usually has her mind made up long before I ask and is quite determined to follow through on any plans she has already made.  She has never been one to worry about what others think or to be swayed by peer pressure.  She knows what she wants and goes for it %100 every time.  I love this about her.

#2: Her spunk.  When I say spunk, I mean her feisty and strong personality.  She is creative and outgoing.  She is curious and smart.  She is often the one to lead out when playing with her sister or friends.  She is not afraid to make her opinions known and is usually successful in rallying others to her various causes.

#3: Her Heart.  Hand in hand with the first two qualities I listed about her, Ellie has been known to sometimes have a quick temper, but she also has a wonderful caring heart.  I have listened to her comfort her little sister when hurt (and run looking for a favorite blanket or stuffed animal that might help Hadley feel better).  I have seen her share her favorite new toys or a special treat that she has been given.  I have watched her reach out to others and make quick friends on a playground full of strangers.  She really does have a great heart and this just might be my very favorite thing about her.

For Ellie's birthday, we went to Classic Fun Center where we skated,

and played in the arcade (and the bounce houses and jungle gym),

and rode scooters (even Dad!), and had a great time together.

We then went to Olive Garden for dinner and came home to open presents.  Ellie received a new doll bunk bed for her birthday (for a doll that she does not even have yet and is hoping to get from Santa this year).  While this gift might not make sense to others, she had her mind made up about it, and like I already noted about Ellie: when she knows what she wants...

So, a doll bed it was!

Because we were out so late, Ellie voted to save cake and ice cream for the next day.

Happy Birthday Sweetheart!  We love you!!

Funnies

6/7/2013

We took the kids to dinner tonight and while we sat around a table outside of Cafe Rio, Austin entertained us with his plethora of Brian Regan jokes.  At one point during dinner, Hayden asked "Do Canadians make money?"  We were so puzzled as to why he asked this until he followed up with, "Austin, if they do, you should be one."

Comedians.  Canadians.  Close enough.

Somehow, we landed on the topic of Ellie's baptism this afternoon.  I commented that it is hard to believe that it is only one year away and Cameron asked her if she was ready for this big step in her life.  She responded with, "Yes, I'm ready.  I've been practicing holding my breath."  I'm pretty sure we were thinking more along the lines of practicing choosing the right, but holding your breath is good too.

We were all in the car last week with the radio on.  At one point, it got so noisy that Cameron turned the music off and suggested that we try to enjoy some peace and quiet.  Without hesitation, Ellie yelled from the back seat, "Peace?  What peace?  I don't want peace!"

And there you have the story of our lives.

Conversation with Hadley this afternoon:

H: Mom, do you know that story about the three bears?
M: Yes.
H: You know the one where the little girl sleeps in their bed?
M: Yes.
H: I would never do that.

I'm so relieved and happy to know that my daughter has made up her mind to not sleep in bear's beds.

Payson Lakes

This past weekend, we went camping as a family.  For the first time in 16 years.  Yep, that's right. 16 years.  I've always used the excuse of not wanting to go with a baby or toddler because it just sounds like way too much work.  This has served me well for many years, but this summer I realized that my number was up.  With Hadley turning five soon, my excuse was no longer valid.

So we thought about going camping.  We talked about going camping.  And finally, with school looming next week, we went camping!

We went to Payson Lakes and stayed at the Blackhawk Campground with the Reich's.  They are much more seasoned campers than we are and were willing to let us tag along and benefit from their experience (and their trailer, and their trailer space, and their games, and even some of their gear).  We really had a good time.  I think my favorite part was the lack of electricity and Wi-Fi (no video games, no movies, no texting and emails, no telephone calls, etc.).  We had plenty of down time but I don't think anyone was bored.  We just enjoyed being together.

The little kids loved cruising the campground on their scooters (I am still trying to get over that they ventured into another person's campground for band-aids and cookies only to come back and assure us that this man was not a stranger "because he was nice."  I guess my "stranger danger" lectures have not been effective...at all.)

Austin found time to read.

We all played horseshoes and Kub and lots of other games (my favorite was Psychiatrist with Hayden... "Pink, pink, pink.  So Pink!).

We spent a day at the lake

where Austin called us out as "wee pansies" (insert German accent here) for our reluctance to join him in the chilly water and "get in touch with nature" (insert accent again).

We boated

and floated

and splashed (and made Michele not very happy).

The kids had fun skipping rocks (and rowing logs across the lake... not the best idea when you are in an inflatable raft, but it made perfect sense to Ellie and actually worked quite well for her).

At the end of the day, after everyone had had their fill of water (and in Hadley's case, walking),

we loaded everything up and headed back to camp for the night.

That evening, Ellie was stung by a bee in the smack-dab center of her lower lip when she took a drink from a soda can that had been left unattended long enough for a bee to make itself at home inside.  Poor girl.  Of course, Mark reminded her that lots of women pay big money to have their lips look like this (think Botox/ Angelina Jolie).

After two nights and almost two days, I realized that my kids had not brushed their teeth since we arrived (except for Ashleigh, she gets a pass on this one).  Gross.

On our last afternoon, and after the little kids took great care to assign themselves "hiking buddies," we ventured out for a walk in the woods.

Unfortunately, we didn't make it far before storm clouds rolled in with thunder and lightning that sent us packing and finally heading home to showers and beds and other lovely things we had lacked for nearly 48 hours (not that I was counting hours or anything).

Thanks Reich's, for a great weekend!  Let's do it again in a year (or two, or three, or four).

And thanks Michele for this wonderfully framed family picture.  It is just perfect!

Just kidding, Austin.  You know we love you.

We just haven't gotten over you calling us "wee pansies" at the lake yet.

20 Years

Tonight, I attended my 20 year high school reunion.  Crazy, that it has been that long!  I had a great time catching up with old friends and acquaintances, but my favorite part was spending time with the people that I still see on a regular basis (Cameron included, of course!).

Put me in a photo booth and I'm pretty sure I am 15 again...
